Trading at the Pakistan Stock Exchange ended with notable losses as the KMI-30 index closed lower amid heavy selling in major sectors.
The index finished the session at 221,927 points, down 1,792 points, or 0.80 percent, compared with the previous trading session.
Investors initially showed optimism as the index moved above 226,000 points during early hours of trading. However, profit-taking in large-cap stocks quickly reversed the gains.
The biggest contributors to the market’s decline included Lucky Cement, OGDC, HUBC, Meezan Bank, and Pakistan Petroleum Limited.
Market analysts say these stocks have significant weight in the KMI-30 index, meaning their price movements strongly influence the benchmark’s direction.
Meanwhile, a few companies helped cushion the decline.
Engro Holdings remained the top performer, adding more than 1,100 points to the index. Technology firm Systems Limited also recorded strong buying activity.
Other supporting stocks included EFERT, Attock Refinery, and GlaxoSmithKline Pakistan.
Experts say the mixed performance indicates that investors are selectively buying fundamentally strong companies while selling stocks that have recently gained significantly.
Market participation remained active, with over 101 million shares traded among index constituents.
Despite the day’s negative close, analysts note that the KMI-30 index has still delivered 20 percent growth during the fiscal year, highlighting the resilience of Pakistan’s stock market.
They also emphasize that global factors such as oil prices, inflation expectations, and currency fluctuations continue to shape investor sentiment.
