Global Energy Crisis Hits Pakistan: LPG Rates Skyrocket as International Prices Surge by $238

Pakistani households are bracing for a tough month ahead as the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) announced a massive price correction for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for April 2026. The increase, driven by a $238 surge in the international market, has pushed the domestic price of LPG to Rs 304.11 per kg, marking one of the sharpest monthly hikes in recent history.

The notification, effective from April 1, reveals that the cost of an 11.8 kg domestic cylinder has risen to Rs 3,588.59. This increase of Rs 923.71 per cylinder is a direct reflection of the volatile energy landscape in the Middle East. Analysts suggest that while the local currency remained relatively stable, the sheer magnitude of the global price jump left the regulator with no choice but to pass the burden on to the consumers.

LPG Distributors Association Chairman, Irfan Khokhar, warned that if regional tensions escalate further, the market could see a “worst-case scenario” where LPG reaches Rs 500 per kg. For the millions of Pakistanis living in areas without piped natural gas, this hike represents a significant blow to the monthly kitchen budget, likely leading to a spike in the prices of cooked food and tea at local eateries.
