Concern has increased among WhatsApp users across the country after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) took strict action against unverified SIMs. In a fresh warning, the agency has clarified that WhatsApp accounts running on unregistered or inactive SIMs may be affected in the future.

According to reports, the government and telecom authorities are running a campaign to eliminate mobile connections registered on fake, illegal and expired identity cards. In this regard, several unverified SIMs have already been blocked, while more action is expected.

According to experts, millions of people in Pakistan use mobile numbers that are either not registered in their own names or are active under years-old identity cards. After the new policy, such users may be at the highest risk because the WhatsApp account is completely linked to the respective mobile number.

Technology experts say that if a user’s SIM is blocked and he wants to log in to his WhatsApp account again, it may be difficult to access the account due to not receiving the verification code. This is why the PTA has advised the public to immediately complete biometric verification of their numbers.

According to officials, the main objective of this policy is to prevent misuse of mobile networks. SIMs whose real identity is not clear are often used in cybercrime, fake calls, financial fraud and illegal activities. The government believes that tightening SIM verification can reduce these crimes.

Digital security experts have also advised users to regularly back up their WhatsApp accounts, enable two-step verification and use only mobile numbers registered in their name. According to them, these measures can reduce the risks of account hacking and data loss.

The PTA has said that users can get their mobile numbers verified from the franchise, customer service center or biometric verification points of the respective mobile company. If the ownership of a number needs to be changed, there is a formal procedure for this too.

Sources associated with the mobile industry say that in the coming months, the government is going to further strengthen the digital identity system, under which mobile numbers will be further integrated with various online services. In this situation, the use of unverified SIMs can create more problems in the future.

There is a strong reaction to the issue on social media platforms. Many users have expressed fears that if their number is blocked, they may lose access to their important chats, business contacts and personal data. However, according to experts, this risk can be avoided with timely measures.

The PTA says that these measures are indispensable to ensure compliance with the law and digital security of users. The organization has appealed to the public to complete the verification of their SIMs immediately to avoid any problems.
