The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has launched a new awareness campaign to protect mobile users, saying that users can avoid spam calls, fraud and unnecessary internet usage by activating specific services on their mobile numbers.
The instructions issued by the PTA state that all major telecom companies in the country have provided “Blind Save” or “PayG Blocker” services, through which users can make their mobile connection more secure.
According to the agency, separate codes have been issued for different mobile networks. Jazz users can activate this service free of cost by dialling *275#; Zong users, *4004#; Ufone users, *6611#; while Telenor Pakistan users can activate this service by dialling *342#.
According to the PTA, this facility has been introduced especially for those users who are bothered by unnecessary internet activity or automated mobile services. Officials say that sometimes users’ balances are quickly depleted due to apps running in the background or suspicious links on mobile phones.
The spokesperson said that after the “PayG Blocker” service is activated, mobile internet and certain digital services will be used only with the user’s permission, which will reduce unnecessary charges and potential cyber threats.
The PTA has also expressed concern over the recent increase in mobile fraud, fake reward messages and phishing attacks. According to the organisation, fraudulent elements often try to cause financial losses to users through fake calls or links, so it is important to take precautions.
According to digital security experts, the number of mobile internet users in Pakistan is continuously increasing; however, a large number of users are not fully aware of the basic principles of cybersecurity. According to them, such security measures can prove to be very useful for the public.
Experts say that if users control their mobile accounts and internet services better, problems such as online fraud and data theft can be significantly reduced. He also advised parents to use this service to limit unnecessary internet access on their children’s mobile phones.
The PTA has directed the public to trust only messages from verified sources and to immediately contact the relevant mobile company or the PTA in case of any suspicious activity.
